Neighbourhood Watch

PSNI PSNI

Neighbourhood Watch N.I. is responsible for supporting and promoting Neighbourhood Watch
schemes across Northern Ireland. It will develop policy, programmes and best practice and represent Neighbourhood Watch nationally, in order to achieve greater public participation and awareness of Neighbourhood Watch.

Neighbourhood Watch - Helping to make Northern Ireland safer

Community Safety seeks to reduce crime, the fear of crime, anti-social behaviour and other
factors that affect perceptions of safety and as a consequence quality of life
.

Neighbourhood Watch supports the emphasis on a local approach to local problems, by offering solutions which are tailored to local needs for a lasting impact. By working together, local communities and relevant agencies in the public, private, business and voluntary sectors can identify and address local concerns about crime, the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour.

Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators:

Central to the effective operation of Neighbourhood Watch is the role of the appointed Co-ordinator. This individual is nominated to act in this capacity by all of those others wishing to be involved in a particular scheme. The relationship between the Co-ordinator and the police will be of critical importance to the long-term success of each scheme.

Communications:

Proper communications is essential to the long-term success of any Neighbourhood Watch scheme. Communications between the police, the Community Safety Co-ordinator, the local community and
other agencies is crucial in maintaining links and identifying opportunities for all parties.

Police support to Neighbourhood Watch:

A key role for police within each district is to support the concept of Neighbourhood Watch and to envourage its development within each community. It is beneficial for each District Command Unit
(D.C.U.) to have an officer responsible for maintaining an overview of all established Neighbourhood Watch schemes within its area. The role and functions of the Community Safety Sergeant is considered to be the most appropriate resource to fulfil this role.
